| Asbestos: The Facts |
|
More than 1.4 million commercial and residentail properties still contain asbestos even though its use is now banned, according to a report published by the Trade Union Congress.
Asbestos is present in three out of four flats built between 1945 and 1985 and in almost all houses built between 1950 and 1985.
Current estimates are that 4,000 people die every year because of asbestos and the toll is predicted to rise to 2,000 a week by 2020.
Every time a builder begins work on the renovation or conversion of a house, flat, shop or office there is no way of knowing if the building is safe and asbestos-free unless testing takes place.
