bSure Training
As a responsible provider of HazMat testing solutions bSure recognises the need for proper training when coming into contact with Asbestos and other dangerous materials.
TRAINING
bSure offers training courses for tradespersons so they can work with asbestos in a safe and systematic way. The courses available are Asbestos Awareness, Asbestos Sampling and Small Works with Asbestos. All the training courses comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Control of asbestos at work regulations 2002 (4th Edition) (CAWR 2002). According to the CAWR 2002 approved code of practice L27, "Asbestos awareness training should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades whose work potentially could disturb the fabric of the building."
Asbestos Awareness
The course content consists of both written and oral presentation, and by demonstration as necessary and covers the following basic elements, (a) the health risks of asbestos and the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke; (b) the types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos in buildings and plant; (c) the general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace; and (d) how to avoid the risks from asbestos, for example for building work no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACM's are not present; work which disturbs ACM's to be restricted to authorised people who are given the necessary additional information, instruction and training.
Course duration is one short day.

Additional Training Requirements
For workers whose work disturbs ACM's it says, "Additional information, instruction and training should be given to those workers whose work disturbs ACM's. Both basic and additional information, instruction and training should be given to those employees who work with asbestos in the manufacturing industry, those who carry out asbestos sampling and analysis, and those maintenance workers whose work will involve knowingly disturbing asbestos." This includes the following elements, (a) the assessment of risk and the purpose of the plan of work; (b) how the correct use of control measures, protective equipment and work methods can reduce the risks from asbestos, limit exposure to workers and limit the spread of asbestos fibres outside the work area; (c) the assessment of exposure and the purpose of air monitoring; (d) the control limits and action levels and their meaning; (e) the maintenance of control measures, including where relevant the maintenance of enclosures and negative pressure equipment; (f) procedures for recording, reporting and correcting defects; (g) the correct selection from a range of suitable RPE, its correct use, cleaning, maintenance and safe storage, with specific attention to ensuring that the RPE is working correctly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and information; (h) the importance of achieving and maintaining a good seal between face and RPE, the relevance of fit tests, and the importance of being clean-shaven; (i) the suitability, correct use, storage and maintenance of protective clothing; (j) decontamination procedures; (k) waste disposal; (l) the role of medical surveillance; (m) other work hazards including working at height, electrical, slips, trips and falls; (n) for analysts personal sampling and leak and clearance sampling techniques; and (o) introduction to relevant HSE regulations, guidance and Approved Codes of Practice.

Asbestos Sampling This course covers safely sampling materials that may contain asbestos and includes the elements for asbestos awareness training, the necessary 'additional information, instruction and training' elements and demonstration of sampling techniques using different tools on different materials.
The candidates carry out practical training work in the following elements. (a) Correct use of RPE/PPE (b) Safe sampling of materials (c) Correct recording of sampling data
Course duration is one day
Small Works with Asbestos
The course is aimed at workers who work with non-licensable asbestos materials, and for working with small amounts of licensable asbestos materials under the 'work of short duration' exemption detailed in the Asbestos Licensing Regulations 1983 (Amended 1998). This course covers safely working with asbestos containing materials and includes the elements for asbestos awareness training, the necessary 'additional information, instruction and training' elements and demonstration of working techniques and control measures for working with asbestos materials. The candidates carry out practical training work in the following elements. (a) Correct use of RPE/PPE (b) Use of controlled wet spraying (c) Use of local exhaust ventilation (shadow vacuum technique) (d) Safe removal of an insulating board panel (e) Correct bagging procedure
Course duration is one day
Re-accreditation
According to the CAWR 2002 approved code of practice L27, "Refresher training should be given at least every year to those workers whose work regularly disturbs asbestos. This training should go beyond the basic/awareness level training. Employers should identify the specific training needs of their employees so that refresher training can be appropriately tailored. More frequent refresher training will be necessary if: (a) work methods change; (b) the type of equipment used to control exposure changes; or (c) the type of work carried out changes significantly. bSure testing are developing an online refresher training module that will enable these requirements to be met conveniently from any computer with internet access. The module shall include training needs analysis (TNA) so that the refresher training meets the needs of each individual candidate. The whole module can be completed online in a single session, or can be divided over a number of smaller sessions, to suit the needs of the individual candidate. This training shall only be available to candidates registered with bSure and who have undergone the bSure Sampling and/or Small Works training courses.
